soma-70F1-6B1F-1312On Tuesday, May 13th a mining disaster claimed the lives of nearly 300 miners in Soma near western Turkey. According to reports the death toll seems certain to rise, as about 100 people are still missing. The disaster was caused by a fire in the mine. Efforts were made to save the victims, however only around 100 have been rescued.The mine explosion is already being called the deadliest industrial disaster in Turkey's history. It is not just those who lost relatives and loved ones in the worst mining tragedy that Turkey has ever faced who are suffering; the whole country is mourning the deaths of the 300 mine workers killed in the disaster. On behalf of Raindrop Foundation we would like to convey our condolences to the friends and relatives of the miners and our deepest sympathies to the families. Now it is time to help the rescued miners and the families of the victims. Raindrop Foundation in collaboration with Embrace Relief has started a campaign for the people of Soma who are affected by the mining disaster. Ladies Coffee Night-"Thanksgiving Special "

ThanksgivingMainRaindrop Turkish House San Antonio organized Turkish Coffee Night with theme of Thanksgiving on Friday November 8, 2013

At the beginning of program Women Association organized the event and welcome guests.

Firstly attendees watched presentations about Thanksgiving. After presentation we started table talk. Than our guests shared their  “Thanksgiving”.

Later we played a game which was enjoyable for our guests. At the end of game first three winners had special traditional gifts.

During the program we served Turkish Coffee. In addition we ate thanksgiving turkey and special Turkish foods.

At the end of the program our guests left cultural center with smiling faces. (November 27, 2013. San Antonio, TX)

Coffee Night November - "Hennah Night"

Raindrop Turkish House San Antonio organized Turkish Coffee Night with theme of Henna Night on Friday October 4, 2013. At the beginning of program Women Association organized the event and welcomed guests. Traditional dressed ladies served Turkish coffee. Than program host present vision and mission of Raindrop Turkish House and activities offered by center. Then attendees watched presentation about Henna Night and shared information about Henna Night Tradition and its importance in Turkish culture as a port of wedding customs. Afterwards while the bridesmaids were bringing the bride in a special red henna night dress, named ‘Bindalli”.The track was lit by the ladies holding candles and singing traditional  henna night song ”yuksek yuksek tepelere..” 

By tradition women placed the henna on one of the bride’s hands. Before the henna is applied, coins or gold are also placed in her hands. (November 21, 2013. San Antonio, TX)

Helping Hands-Happy Bellies

MainRaindrop Helping Hands San Antonio visited San Antonio Food Bank, Madison Square Presbyterian Church, The Children's Shelter-SanAntonio and donated  sacrificial meat to these institutions and also distributed to needy people in the neighborhood.

The Turkish American Community in San Antonio donated the sacrificial meat for the purpose of fulfilling the duties of Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı, also called as "Feast of the Sacrifice"). Click here for more information on Eid al-Adha. (November 18, 2013. San Antonio, TX)

Social Friday November

mainRaindrop Turkish House in San Antonio hosted it's monthly Friday Social Night of November on November, 15 2013. Friday social was another wonderful opportunity to bring families together and shared opinions about the topic of the event which was "Appreciation".

The event's special guest was Mr. Jason Winn from San Antonio Storytellers Association. Guests enjoyed Mr Winn's Moroccan story as well as the stories that Mrs. Vida Olara and Ms. Angela Hartzel told. 

After the storytelling, the dinner was served. The event's special meal was "Orman Kebab" special thanks to lady volunteer's of Raindrop Turkish House San Antonio for the rach menu they prepared. 

At the end of this remarkable time together they spend, all guests and Raindrop volunteers look forward to meeting again. (November 16, 2013. San Antonio, TX)
